Memorial planned Wednesday for 10th anniversary of Woodburn bank bombing

Members of the public are invited to attend a 10th-anniversary memorial Wednesday honoring the victims the Woodburn bank bombing.

On December 12, 2008, the explosion killed Woodburn Police Capt. Tom Tennant and Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Bill Hakim, gravely injured then-Woodburn Police Chief Scott Russell and injured West Coast Bank employee Laurie Perkett.

Their deaths shocked the Woodburn community and launched a massive investigation and criminal trial. 

Bruce Turnidge, and his son, Joshua Turnidge, were later convicted of aggravated murder for plotting the bombing and sentenced to death row. 

A bomb blast at West Coast Bank in Woodburn killed a local police officer and a state bomb disposal technician,  no suspects are yet in custody, officials said Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008.

At noon Wednesday, a memorial event at the Woodburn Memorial Transit Center will mark the anniversary.

“This memorial is a way to continue to honor the lives of Captain Tennant and Trooper Hakim, keeping Woodburn’s commitment to never forget them or their sacrifice,” said Woodburn Police Chief Jim Ferraris. “While the bombing was a tragedy, resulting in loss of life and injury, it galvanized this community, bringing people together and demonstrating strength and resolve that continues on to this day.” 

The City of Woodburn, Woodburn Police Department and community nonprofit Woodburn Proud are co-sponsoring the memorial. 

Reflections and remarks will be delivered by Mayor Kathy Figley, Mayor-Elect Eric Swenson, City Administrator Scott Derickson, Ferraris, Rhonda Judson from Woodburn Proud and Pastor Luis Molina.

The Memorial Transit Center is located on Highway 214 at Evergreen Road, adjacent to Tom Tennant Drive.
