The Amazon fulfillment center in southeast Salem opens in 2019.

Amazon has started advertising jobs for its packing and shipping center opening in southeast Salem in time for the 2019 holiday season.

So far, only manager jobs have been posted.

The Seattle e-commerce giant is seeking a site EHS manager and an entry-level area manager for the 1-million-square-foot Mill Creek Corporate Center site, according to job listings published as recently as December.

More than 1,000 workers are expected to work at the Salem operation, with jobs paying at least $15 a hour under a company minimum wage requirement adopted in 2018, possibly intensifying pressure on other local employers to raise their pay.

Other employers will need to compete by providing stable hours and better pay and benefits, University of Oregon economics professor Tim Duy has told the Statesman Journal.

Economic development officials have said Amazon's project at 4775 Depot Court SE would be eligible for upwards of $3.7 million in tax incentives over three years.

Amazon spokesman Lauren Lynch confirmed Monday the company is hiring for the positions. She has said the site will open for the 2019 holiday season, though she didn't have an exact date available for this story.

Still, the job posts offer a sliver of insight. The entry-level area manager is expected to start in May 2019, according to the job posts. No start date was listed for the site EHS manager, who will oversee safety practices at the warehouse.

Job requirements include:

Entry-Level Area Manager

  • A completed bachelor's degree is required.
  • Lead, manage, and develop a team of 50 to 200 Amazon associates.
