A 42-year-old Salem man incarcerated at the Santiam Correctional Institution died Monday morning for unknown reasons.

Jeffery Foret died around 7:45 a.m. at the Salem prison at 4005 Aumsville Hwy SE, according to an Oregon Department of Corrections statement after his family had been notified.

The Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office has not determined the cause of Foret's death.

He had been arrested by Salem Police and convicted in August 2016 with failure to perform the duties of a driver to an injured person following a hit-and-run accident, according to court documents.

He was given three years of probation.

He was transferred to state corrections from Marion County Jail Sept. 25, 2018 for violating terms of his probation. His earliest release date was in January 2021.

Foret had separate convictions in Polk County for eluding police, reckless driving and failure to perform the duties of a driver, according to Jennifer Black, DOC communications manager. He was given 18 months probation for each conviction.

Santiam Correctional Institution is a minimum-security prison that houses approximately 440 male inmates who are within four years of release.

DOC is responsible for the care and custody of 14,900 men and women who are incarcerated in 14 institutions across the state.
