Health officials confirm one measles case in Salem

Officials confirmed a case of measles Tuesday in a Salem residence. 

The case is linked to a traveler who recently visited the county and is unrelated to the outbreak in Clark, Washington and Multnomah counties, Oregon Health Authority officials said in a release. 

Officials are monitoring the person and awaiting lab test results on another possible case. The lab results should be available in the next 48 hours, according to Public Health Division Director Katrina Rothenberger with Marion County.

The county is working with OHA to notify individuals of their potential exposure and help them take steps to prevent exposing others. 

While most Oregonians have been vaccinated and have a low risk of illness, the risk could be higher for unvaccinated individuals who were exposed at one of the following locations: 

• Youth With a Mission, 7085 Battle Creek Road SE, Salem, between 7 a.m. on Feb. 18 and 5 p.m. on March 11. 
• Get Air Trampoline Park, 3910 Rickey St. SE, Salem, from 1:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 21
• Red Robin, 831 Lancaster Dr. NE, Salem, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 21
• Portland International Airport: Southwest Airlines check-in area and Concourse C, from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 22

Health officials began actively monitoring unvaccinated individuals on March 1 after a traveler with measles visited several locations in Salem, Rothenberger said.

The person with the confirmed case was "advised to stay in their home and not go out to public places, and we're pretty confident that happened" she said.

Officials urge people to avoid going to the doctor if they are not immune, have been exposed and have symptoms. 

Instead, they are asked to contact a doctor by telephone to avoid exposing others in waiting rooms. 

Tho with questions about public exposures should call (503) 588-5621. The call center is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
