About 30 Salem-area high school students, with support from Renew Oregon, joined the Global Climate Strike and National Youth Climate Strike during a rally at the Oregon State Capitol on Friday afternoon.

Earlier, a busload of Portland students also gathered at the Capitol for a noon demonstration in support of what they say are solutions to global warming.

Two South Salem High School students, sophomore Eddy Binford-Ross and freshman Claire Graham, spoke at the rally. Binford-Ross said if the Oregon Legislature would pass a proposed Clean Energy Jobs bill, it could inspire other states to do the same.

The group then marched around the Capitol waving signs advocating change. They had walked out of class an hour early to attend the event, which was mirrored in cities across the U.S.
