Firefighters respond to Salem strip mall fire near Lancaster Drive NE

Firefighters responded early Saturday morning to a second-alarm fire at a Salem strip mall near the corner of Lancaster Drive NE and Auburn Road NE.

Mattress World Northwest at 618 Lancaster Dr. NE "suffered heavy fire and smoke damage after a suspicious exterior fire got into the roof system," Marion County Fire District #1 Battalion Chief Mark Bjorklund wrote in a statement posted to the district's Facebook page.

No injuries were reported.

Fire officials "took about 3 hours to find and control the blaze that was running in the roof-truss system," Bjorklund wrote. "Due to the inability to find the fire, crews had to cut inspection and vent holes to isolate and ultimately extinguish the fire."

The cause remains under investigation.

Marion County Fire District #1 officials were aided by fire officials from Salem, Keizer, Aumsville and Turner.
