May Day march in Salem: Street, bus stop closures near Capitol
An annual march will close streets around the Oregon State Capitol on Wednesday, May 1.
The 14th annual May Day event in Salem is scheduled to kick off at 11:30 a.m. with a rally followed by a march after 1 p.m. that will travel along streets surrounding the Capitol Mall.
Immigrant rights organization Causa Oregon is using the event to demonstrate support for driver's licenses for non-citizens, education funding and paid family and medical leave.

May Day, also known as International Workers' Day, has grown from highlighting workers' rights to nationwide events drawing attention to other causes including immigrants' rights.
Police are cautioning drivers to plan to avoid the area during the event or expect delays. Officials say all streets should reopen by 3 p.m.
Street closures for the event
At 10 a.m. the following streets will close:
- Court Street NE between 12th Street NE and Cottage Street NE
- Waverly Street NE between Court Street NE and State Street
- Winter Street NE between Court Street NE and Chemeketa Street NE
- Capitol Street NE between Court Street NE and Chemeketa Street NE
At 12:45 p.m. the following streets will close:
- Cottage Street NE between Court Street NE and State Street
- State Street between Church Street and 12th Street
- Winter Street SE between State Street and Ferry Street SE
- Capitol Street NE between Chemeketa Street NE and Center Street NE
- Winter Street NE between Chemeketa Street NE and Center Street NE
- Chemeketa Street NE between Capitol Street NE and Cottage Street NE
Bus route, stops impact
According to Cherriots, detours and changes to stop locations on bus routes 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 13 and 18 are scheduled for Wednesday. A full list can be found at Cherriots.org/alerts.
