Overnight lane closures are coming to a stretch of Interstate 5 between Salem and Woodburn during a repaving project.

Beginning Monday, 12 miles of I-5 between mileposts 259 and 271, including six bridges, receive a new surface, according to Oregon Department of Transportation.

The first phase of the $22.7 million project, beginning Monday, will see lane closures as work begins on bridges in the Salem area from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Friday.

By May 19, crews expect to begin paving the northbound lanes between Woodburn and Brooks with lane closures beginning as early as 7 p.m. and continuing until 9 a.m., Sunday night to Friday.

Officials say repaving the stretch now, last paved 11 years ago, will save money over waiting for the road surface to further deteriorate.

The project is expected to wrap up by October.

Officials are reminding drivers the speed limit in construction zones is 50 mph and Oregon State Police will be monitoring traffic during the work.
