Owners Katie and Michael Peters have announced their plans to close The Doughnut Shop in Stayton following their normal operating hours on Sunday, May 19.

The couple have owned the longstanding bakery since January 2018 when they purchased it from Karen Lane.

Katie Peters cited slow sales as the reason behind their decision to shutter the business coinciding with the end of their lease at 171 West Washington Street.

"Stayton’s a pretty small town we’re not making enough to support our family," she said.

Even though Stayton residents are sad to see them go, as evidenced by the comments section of their post announcing plans to close on the businesses' Facebook page, the Peters are already planning a new chapter.

They're in the process of pinning down a location for a new bakery in Salem.

The Doughnut Shop, a Stayton favorite, will close its doors for good on Sunday, May 19, 2019.

When they bought The Doughnut Shop, said Peters, they hewed closely to the business' focus on doughnuts. The new business, to be called Wicked Sweet, will be more comprehensive bakery cafe.

"Stayton shouldn’t expect an exact replica."

Peters studied baking and patisserie at the Portland campus of Le Cordon Bleu. The couple is planning for a bakery that offers a selection of doughnuts, but also cakes, cookies, sticky buns and a menu of espresso beverages.

The Peters haven't yet confirmed a location for Wicked Sweet, but this weekend is the chance for Doughnut Shop fans to make a farewell-for-now visit.

On Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19 The Doughnut Shop will be open normal hours: Saturday and Sunday from 5 until 11 a.m., or until they sell out.
