A fatal crash near downtown Salem left a pedestrian dead and prompted the closure of Center Street NE for about three hours Tuesday.

Around 2:45 p.m., Marshall Leslie, 27, of Wilsonville, was crossing Center Street NE at 12th Street NE near the Safeway grocery store, according to Lt. Treven Upkes with Salem Police.

While in the crosswalk, Leslie was hit by the driver of a white Cadillac SUV who was heading eastbound on Center Street NE and ran a red light at 12th Street.

Leslie died at the scene.

The driver of the Cadillac, Willie Dempsey, 35, of Salem, stayed at the scene and was later taken to Salem Hospital for an evaluation, according to Upkes.

Investigators said Dempsey may have been experiencing a medical issue when he hit Leslie. There have been no arrests made at this time.

A white Ford SUV also was damaged in the crash.

A Cadillac SRX is shown involved where a pedestrian was struck near Safeway at the intersection of Center Street NE and 12th Street NE in Salem on June 11, 2019.
