Salem Fire Hazmat called to Salem Hospital for strong odor

Crews from Salem Fire Department responded to a report of a strong odor at Salem Hospital early Friday, June 14, 2019.

Workers at Salem Hospital arrived to find a strong odor in an underground area of the Critical Care Tower early Friday morning.

Crews from Salem Fire Department responded the incident in the 800 block of Oak St. SE at about 4:10 a.m., according to dispatch records.

Following an investigation by a Hazmat team, the source was found to be batteries inside of a storage area that may have been overcharged, according to Captain Brian Hollis.

No evacuations were ordered and the incident was confined to the single room in the basement.

The scene was cleared and crews were wrapping up their investigation by about 6 a.m.
