Southbound traffic on Interstate 5 saw major backups Wednesday morning.

The paving project to resurface lanes of the interstate created backups that could last until at least 9 a.m., according to Oregon Department of Transportation.

Officials warn drivers that delays of up to 30 minutes are possible.

The nightly closures, Sunday to Friday, follow the same schedule for much of the project: One lane will be closed as early as 7 p.m. until 9 a.m. the following morning and two lanes could be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning.

An upcoming exception will be during the Oregon State Fair. The project will be halted from August 23 to September 3 to allow for the increased traffic for drivers heading to the event.

More information on the paving project can be found at i5salempaving.com.
