Salem man sentenced to 4 years prison for string of coffee shop, restaurant burglaries

A Salem man accused of burglarizing several coffee shops, restaurants and small businesses was sentenced to four years in prison. 

John Albert Herriges, 41, pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree burglary and three counts of second-degree criminal mischief and was sentenced Jan. 15. 

Herriges was arrested in 2017 after Keizer Police requested the public's help with locating him in connection to a string of burglaries. 

Investigators believed he damaged property at a Dutch Bros. Coffee on 4015 River N on Oct. 12, 2017. Two days later, he allegedly burglarized a Bentley's Coffee shop on 4435 River Road N. The coffee shops are less than a half a mile away from each other.

He was arrested in December 2017 after a woman saw him walk into a bathroom at a Salem restaurant. 

She told responding officers she had seen news reports of Herriges being wanted in connection with the Keizer burglaries.

His alleged crimes joined a growing list of burglaries in the Keizer, Salem, West Salem and Linn County areas.

He was charged with second-degree burglary and second-degree criminal mischief for shattering a window and breaking into a Bentley's Coffee location on Mission Street SE.

According to court records, Herriges was later connected to burglarizing a Sonic Drive-In, a Salem Dutch Bros. Coffee, Spin City Laundry, Love Love Teriyaki and Good Times Grill, causing thousands of dollars in damage. 

He was also charged in connection with a burglary at the Crooked House Bistro on the 1100 block of Edgewater Road NW in August 2017.

Herriges was later charged with burglarizing a Dutch Bros. Coffee and Spirit Espresso kiosk in Albany.

In April 2018, he was charged with second-degree escape for escaping from police custody. 

He faced a total of 31 charges in connection to the burglaries and escape. 

Herriges has a long criminal history, including multiple drug charges and a conviction for methamphetamine possession and endangering the welfare of a child in 2008.
