Police called the SWAT team Saturday after a Salem man allegedly stole a patrol vehicle and barricaded himself inside of a home.

Around 6:30 p.m., Salem Police tried to stop Jessie Guajardo, 30, who was known to have felony warrants out for his arrest from last year, including two counts of attempting to elude an officer, unauthorized use of a vehicle and hit and run.

Authorities chased Guajardo on foot, but lost sight of him, according to Lt. Michael Bennett with Salem Police. Guajardo returned to the initial location where police tried to stop him and stole an officer's patrol car.

Police located the car, which Guajardo abandoned near 23rd Street SE and Simpson Street SE.

Guajardo was found in a home at 2200 block of Simpson Street SE, where he refused to surrender.

The Salem Police SWAT Team was called to the scene because of the suspect's "extensive criminal history," according to Bennett.

Within minutes of SWAT arriving, Guajardo came out of the home and was arrested.

Officials said the stolen patrol car was not damaged and all of the equipment was accounted for.

Guajardo was taken to the Maron County Jail.

He was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, attempt to elude, first-degree theft and first-degree trespass.
