A 37-year-old inmate died at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem Monday afternoon.

The cause has not been released.

Dominic Francis Genise, of Gladstone, was sentenced after being convicted of identity theft and vehicle theft in 2016. His earliest release date was July 19, 2020.

As with all in-custody deaths, the Oregon State Police have been notified, and the Medical Examiner will determine his cause of death.

Prison officials declined to release further information. In the past, officials have refused to disclose inmates' causes of death, citing privacy concerns.

In 2018, 35 inmates died in Department of Corrections custody.
