A former softball coach from Aumsville was sentenced Monday to 15 days in jail and five years probation for sexually abusing a teen.

Jacob Bangert, 44, was the victim's coach at the time of the abuse, according to court records.

Bangert was arrested in August on four counts of second-degree sexual abuse. He was accused of having sexual intercourse with the teen, who was unable to consent due to her age. After posting $4,000 security, Bangert was released from jail.

Marion County District Attorney's Office officials confirmed Bangert was a summer softball coach in 2015 when the abuse took place.

He was previously convicted of fourth-degree assault in 1999 and second-degree theft in 2017.

Bangert pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree sexual abuse, convictions which can hold a presumptive sentence of 20 months in prison and a maximum sentence of five years in prison. But in a downward departure, Bangert was sentenced to 15 days in jail and five years of probation.

Marion County Judge Channing Bennett ordered that Bangert serve three years total in prison if he violates his probation.

During his probation, he is barred from contacting his victim, drinking alcohol, working or volunteering with minors and going to places where minors congregate, such as playgrounds, athletic events, schools or parks.

Bangert is also required to register as a sex offender.
