A Woodburn man who was recently fired from Heritage Specialty Foods allegedly went to the Wilsonville business Friday and fatally shot a manager, according to officials.

Deputies responded about 8:20 a.m. to the scene on SW Boberg Road, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Officials say the suspect, identified as Camilo Santiago-Santiago, 25, allegedly opened fire, striking one person at the business, and fled.

The victim, identified as 36-year-old manager Carl Hellinger of Portland, died at the scene. No other injuries were reported. Santiago-Santiago was recently fired from Heritage Specialty Foods, deputies said.

The suspect was located after a pursuit in Woodburn by a deputy from Marion County.

Santiago-Santiago pulled into a residential neighborhood near the Woodburn Premium Outlets and stopped in a cul-de-sac, said Woodburn Police Chief Jim Ferraris.

Officers engaged him and blocked his vehicle in with armored vehicles. Officials started to negotiate with him, Ferraris said.

A standoff lasted for about 40 minutes, during which the suspect sometimes yelled at officials to shoot him, deputies said. He eventually surrendered and was taken into custody without incident at 9:30 a.m., officials said.

He had a pistol tucked in his waistband when he was taken into custody, deputies said. Officials also found two additional firearms in the sedan.

A "shelter in place" alert was issued for residents in the Woodburn neighborhood where police had surrounded the suspect, according to METCOM dispatch agency.

Officers from other regional agencies responded, including deputies from Marion County Sheriff and officers from Woodburn Police and Salem Police. Ferraris complimented the inter-agency cooperation during the operation.

"It was a good outcome to a bad situation," he said.

As of Friday afternoon, detectives were interviewing Santiago-Santiago. Deputies said he was expected to be booked into Clackamas County Jail on second-degree murder and felon in possession of a weapon charges.

Police say an individual was shot in Wilsonville Friday morning.
