Sale to benefit Deepwood museum

Just some of the items you'll find at the Deepwood Garage Sale fundraiser on June 8.

Find your own piece of treasure and help support the Deepwood Museum and Gardens this weekend.

The sale kicks off at 8 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at the Deepwood greenhouse building off of 12th and Lee Streets.

Up for offer will be a variety of home decor, kitchen wares, books, holiday decorations and other items.

Explore a plant-based diet at VegFest

Bring an appetite and curiosity to learn more about the world of whole foods plant-based diets this weekend for Salem's first Cherry City VegFest.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at Pringle City Park and Community Hall at 606 Church Street SE.

Ballet students bring 'Alice in Wonderland' to Elsinore

Local ballet students from the American Ballet Academy will take to the stage this weekend for a children's version of "Alice in Wonderland."

The production promises high energy, costumes and dancing during two performances, 7 p.m. Saturday June 8, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday June 9.

Tickets start at $14 and can be purchased from the Historic Elsinore Theatre box office or etix.com. Profits from ticket sales will be donated to CASA of Marion County.

Free concert boasts movie music 

The Salem Community Chorus will present a free, family-friendly program of music from movies including the "Wizard of Oz," "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," "Titanic," "Forest Gump" and "The Greatest Showman."

The Music From the Movies concert begins at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 9 in the Loucks Auditorium at the Salem Public Library at 585 Liberty St SE.

The 80 member mixed chorus will sing under the direction of Anna Robinson, accompanied by pianist Adam Robinson.

Event offers free dental services

Hunsaker Dental will hold their sixth 'Dental from the Heart' event June 7.

A local practice will again be offering free filling, extraction and teeth cleaning for adults 18 and over who do not have access to dental services during their 'Dentistry from the Heart' event.

Hunsaker Dental is holding their sixth annual event Friday, June 7, at their office at 1595 Commercial Street SE.

Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. and attendees are encouraged to arrive early and be prepared for a potentially long wait in line outside with weather-appropriate clothing, plus water and snacks.

Organizers say procedures will take place between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. with the first 75 patients guaranteed to be seen.

The previous events have resulted in more than $105,000 in dental care services being donated to the community.

Gather garden ideas with Silverton tour

Seven gardens open their gates for a self-driven, public tour this weekend in Silverton allowing visitors to get ideas for their own gardens or just enjoy the green spaces.

The Silverton Home Garden Tour kicks off at 10 a.m. to pick up a tour map at a welcome booth at 334 Westfield Street or the Silverton Farmers Market at Town Square Park. Visitors have until 3 p.m. to complete the tour of home gardens located both in and around Silverton.

Tickets are $20 per person if purchased ahead of the event and can be purchased online at SilvertonTogether.org or in person at the Silverton Farmers Market, Silverton Chamber of Commerce, Silverton Senior Center and the Silverton Together office. Children aged 10 and under are free.

Pedal to raise funds for cancer program

The Salem Kiwanis Club is hosting the 'Salem 3-2-1 Family Fun Ride' June 16.

The Kiwanis Club of Salem is hosting the first '3, 2, 1, Family Bike Ride for Doernbecher Children's Cancer Program' on Father's Day, next weekend.

The ride on Sunday, June 16 will encompass paved pathways within Salem's three parks by the Willamette River, Riverfront, Wallace Marine and Minto Island, and offers two routes, eight miles or 15 miles, with a goal of raising $7,000 for the Doernbecher Children's Cancer Program.

Entry fees are $25 per rider, $40 for rider plus one, or $65 for a family in addition to any donations raised prior to the ride.

Toastmasters meetup on the Capitol Mall

The Area 41 Toastmasters International and Dallas Toastmasters clubs are inviting those wishing to polish their communication skills to join them on the Capitol Mall for a lawn party.

"Toastmasters is a supportive and positive learning environment of all skill levels working together as a team to help each other improve communication, leadership, mentoring, interviewing and team building skills," says Lisa Davis, event coordinator and Toastmasters Area 41 Program Quality Director.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, June 7 near the Wall of Water fountain.

Lawn games, impromptu speeches and more information on the organizations will be available.

Season of plays draws on new work by NW playwrights

Theatre 33 has announced their summer series of plays by NW playwrights.

Theatre 33, a play development company that brings work from northwest playwrights to Salem, has announced their sixth summer season.

Plays are staged at the M. Lee Pelton Playhouse on the Willamette University campus and are open to the community with a $10 suggested donation.

First up is "Burst" by Rachel Bublitz, playing 7 p.m. June 12 through 15 and 2 p.m. on June 15 and 16.

"An environmental tech company built with shady tactics is about to receive vital funding, but founder Sarah Boyd must first navigate a tough reporter and her waffling CTO to avoid disaster and secure it," according to the company.

In July, "Bethany Sees the Stars" by Emily Golden runs July 10 through 14.

"When 15-year-old Bethany receives a letter inviting her to be a crew member on the first manned mission to Mars, she must decide whether she is willing to leave the Earth behind once and for all."

Rounding out the series in August is "The Harder Courage" by Leslie Slape, August 7 through 11.

"A true NW story about the friendship between a sheriff and his condemned prisoner explores themes of family, vigilante justice, capital punishment, war, PTSD, and overcoming our fears."

Produce, art and food trucks at Aumsville market

As Aumsville's "Second Saturday Market" enters its ninth year, the event is on the move to Porter-Boone Park and will expand offerings.

The market will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 8 and will continue every second Saturday until September at the park at 1105 Main Street.

In addition to a variety of seasonal produce, garden products, crafts and art, the event will open up space for food trucks this year.

'Crest the Cascades' on McKenzie Pass

Cyclists from Eugene ride over McKenzie Pass Highway 242 during the season when only bicycle travel is open.

A unique opportunity is coming up to join an organized bicycle ride over the old McKenzie Pass.

The 9th annual Crest the Cascades offers cyclists a choice of three routes from just over 30 miles to 76 miles round trip along Oregon Highway 242, a section of which is annually closed to vehicle traffic by Oregon Department of Transportation until late June.

Registration is open now for the Saturday, June 15, event at CrestTheCascades.org. A pre-ride packet pick-up party will be Friday, June 14 at Blazin Saddles, 413 W Hood Ave in Sisters.

Funds raised by the ride go towards projects on the Deschutes National Forest.
