Save the Salem Peace Mosaic to host benefit concert

Save the Salem Peace Mosaic is hosting a benefit night with music from guitar virtuoso Terry Robb and a silent auction Aug. 2 at Willamette Heritage Center.

Save the Salem Peace Mosaic is hosting a benefit night with music from guitar virtuoso Terry Robb and a silent auction from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, in the Dye Room at Willamette Heritage Center, 1313 Mill St. SE.

Robb's stop in Salem is one of nine shows in the northwest scheduled for August and September. He is supporting his newest album, "Confessin' My Dues."

The evening will also include an appearance by Caesar the No Drama Llama.

The Salem Peace Mosaic spans the facade of the Salem Family YMCA building near the Oregon State Capitol. Led by artist Lynn Takata in 2011, over 600 members of the community contributed to the mosaic, which includes over 25,000 tiles. The organization says the project created a positive symbol of community life and spirit for the City of Salem.

Tickets for the event are $10 online or at the door. Tickets are available at www.savethesalempeacemosaic.org.

Salem Elks Lodge partners with Easter Seals Oregon

The Salem Elks Lodge #336 has announced a partnership with the Easter Seals Oregon Supportive Services for Veterans Families program and the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program.

The announcement continues the lodge's tradition of support for our nation's veterans and military.

Using grants from the Elks National Foundation in partnership with the Elks National Veterans Service Commission, the Salem Elks Lodge will work with Easter Seals Oregon to help provide welcome-home kits of basic household supplies to homeless veterans transitioning into housing, according to a release. The lodge will also utilize additional grant funding to support employment services for veterans, including providing interview clothing, resume services and required items for veterans entering the workforce.

“I think we all wish that programs like ours weren’t necessary to support our nation's veterans,” Exalted Ruler of Salem Elks Lodge Blake Whitson said. “As long as this need exists, our lodge and our order are ready to do everything we can to serve and give back to these heroes who have given so much of themselves for us and our freedoms.”

The Salem Elks Lodge provides a free Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving lunch, food boxes and Christmas presents for the families of veterans and National Guard members in need. Additionally, the lodge supports area students through its scholarship program, back-to-school backpacks and other charitable programs.

Get decked out to explore downtown in the Great Salem Race Aug. 17

Explore downtown Salem in the Great Salem Race Aug. 17 at the Salem Convention Center.

Explore downtown Salem in the Great Salem Race, set for Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Salem Convention Center, 200 Commercial St. SE.

The event is a family-friendly scavenger hunt organized by the Salem Young Professionals of the Inspire Foundation, a charitable arm of the Salem Chamber of Commerce.

From 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the race will take participants to various locations in the downtown Salem area as they solve a list of clues. Each location features a quick challenge. Then its a race back to the convention center.

The event is geared toward families, friends, co-workers, young professionals, churches, youth groups, sports teams, clubs and businesses, organizers said. All are encouraged to participate.

Teams of 2 to 4 participants are $80. The cost increases to $100 on Thursday, Aug. 1. Two categories will be contested. The competitive division will feature prizes for first-, second- and third-place finishers of the 3-to-5-mile course. The casual division will feature fewer clues and, therefore, a shorter course.

Teams are encouraged to wear costumes, and participants can celebrate at the post-race party.

Santiam Hospital golf tournament set for Aug. 24

Santiam Hospital invites you to take part in the Unmurder Mystery Golf Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 24, at Santiam Golf Club, 8724 Golf Club Road SE in Aumsville.

The tournament will have an 8 a.m. shotgun start as teams of four play an 18-hole scramble format. Check in will begin at 7 a.m.

Space is limited for foursomes, so it is recommended that you register soon. Cost is $75 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf, carts and a drink ticket.

The Chill Grill food truck will be on site offering lunch for players as they finish their round.

Santiam Hospital is presenting the tournament to promote prescreening for health concerns, the hospital said in a release. Golfers will find clues along the course — which will make them eligible for prizes — and Santiam Hospital physicians and staff will be on hand to provide information about the importance of prescreening.

The morning will consist of games, activities, a raffle and snacks. Prizes will be awarded for correct clue game answers, the lowest-scoring foursome and winners in the women’s and men’s closest-to-the-pin and longest-drive contests.

A portion of each tournament sponsorship and player fee will benefit the Santiam Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Fund, which helps local students who are pursuing a career in the medical or hospital field, the hospital said.

Those interested in becoming a sponsor may call 503-884-1336. To enter as a player, go to www.santiamhospital.org or call 503-769-9241.

Zak's photography will be on display at the school, 2111 Front St. NE in building 3.

Born and raised in Oregon, Zak takes inspiration from the way light transforms common, mundane objects into beautiful sights, such as the wheat field covered in evening light he saw one night when he was 12, a night that jumpstarted his photography passion.
