Additional funds for the project were secured from the city of Mill City ($200,000), the Save Our Bridge Committee ($200,000) and Linn County ($700,000).

Pair of open house events hosted by Marion County Fire District #1

In an effort to improve communication with taxpayers, Marion County Fire District #1 is hosting a pair of open houses.

The events are scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at two stations in the north and south side of the district — Station 6, 8005 Wheatland Road N in Keizer, and Station 1, 300 Cordon Road NE in Salem.

“We are grateful for the support of our community and want to say thank you,” Fire Chief Kyle McMann said in a release. “This also gives us an opportunity to show our taxpayers how we spend their money to save lives and property.”

Refreshments will be served, and plenty of activities are planned, including station tours, safety demonstrations, and an “apparatus crawl” for kids and adults — which means climbing all over fire engines, ambulances, brush trucks and emergency equipment.

McMann said there is a rumor that Smokey Bear will make a surprise appearance.

Fire Chief McMann can be reached at 503-588-6535 or kylem@mcfd1.com. More information about the fire district can be found at www.mcfd1.com.

Repair Fair and Share Event offered Sept. 18

Need something fixed? Marion County and the City of Salem's Repair Fair and Share Event on Sept. 18 might be your perfect match.

Community "fixperts" will be on hand from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at Pringle Hall Community Center, 606 Church St. SE, to fix items and to teach you how to repair your own items, according to a release.

Eligible items include jewelry, stringed instruments, textiles, small appliances, computers and tools that need sharpening. Guests should bring replacement parts to aid in the repair.

This is a first come, first served event, and guests may bring one item at a time to have it repaired. If there is space, guests may bring another item after the initial repair.

Why a repair fair? The county hopes the public will embrace the mantra of "repair rather than replace," focusing on troubleshooting and waste reduction.

"Our goal is to change behaviors and encourage a repair culture," event organizer and waste reduction coordinator for Marion County Jessica Ramey said. "Repair is good for economic development, our wallet and also the planet."

The event is looking for repair volunteers, fixers and supporters, plus participants to help with the event. To sign up or learn more about this event, visit www.repairfair.net.

For more information, contact Jessica Ramey at 503-365-3180 or jsramey@co.marion.or.us.

Free clothing giveaway on tap Sept. 21

Salem First Church of the Nazarene will host its 18th annual Community Free Clothing Giveaway from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21.

The church is located at 1550 Market St. NE.

The giveaway will distribute free clothing for infants, children, teens, women and men.

This is one way in which the Salem First Nazarene congregation shares with and serves the people of the community, organizers said. With many families struggling economically, this event goes toward helping with the cost of clothing.

All are invited to help themselves to the available clean and useable clothing for free. Participants will be divided into groups and given 30 minutes to make their selections. Bags will be provided and free child care will be available.

Organizers will accept clothing donations for the giveaway from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, through Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the church gym door. Items should be clean and in good condition.
