McKay High School will present "Rock of Ages" beginning Friday, Jan. 17 for two weekends.

McKay High School’s winter musical, "Rock of Ages," hits the stage beginning Friday, Jan. 17 for two weekends.

A cast and crew of 50 students hope audience members will have a good time as the show relives the glory days of glam rock.

"Rock of Ages" takes you back to the 1980s in Hollywood and one of the Sunset Strip's last legendary venues, where a rock and roll fairy tale is interrupted by developers with plans to turn the fabled Strip into another capitalist strip mall. Music selections include hits from Poison, Twisted Sister, Styx and Pat Benatar.

Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, Saturday, Jan. 18, Friday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Jan. 25, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Oregon State Sen. James I. Manning Jr. will be the keynote speaker at the 17th annual Silverton King Observance on Jan. 20.

The potluck is intended to feature the southern cuisine Dr. King was fond of. Event organizer Robert Sisk with Silverton People For Peace said he will once again bring apple pies and mac and (three) cheese, and noted that barbecue is always encouraged.

Manning will follow with the keynote address, “Restoring the Dream.”

The past few years has drawn capacity attendance,  Sisk said. The event is co-sponsored by Silverton People For Peace and the Silverton Grange.
