AHS: Info on new food bank surfaces at potluck

Pastor Eric Nylund and his wife, Rocky, manage the new Aumsville food bank.

Aumsville Historical Society families and friends gathered in the town’s community center for a holiday potluck on Thursday, Dec. 8, a festive get-together in lieu of the usual business meeting.

After dinner Olivia Chytka led the group in some Christmas trivia games, as game prizes were generously provided by Deletta Fuller.

Food donations to the new Aumsville Food Bank were presented to Pastor Eric Nylund and his wife, Rocky.  They spoke about their facility in the yellow Pentecostal Church building between Leverman and Mill Creek roads, east of Aumsville.

The food bank’s open hours are from 9 to 11 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursdays. The Nylunds can be reached at 541-228-0474.

The local Cub Scouts asked AHS to talk to them about changes which had taken place in Aumsville.  On Wednesday, Nov. 16, Carol Roller and Ted Shepard attended their meeting and showed the scouts vintage pictures.  They told about such things as the transition from horse power to train travel and transport, and then the use of motor vehicles.

Some years ago, Lorene Mathews assembled a book she entitled "Over 100 Years of Styles, Prices and Fads."  When she moved to Missouri, the book went elsewhere, but Karlene Santibanez tracked it down and returned it to the museum.

Lorene had pasted in advertisements for a wide range of products.  These days, everything in the book looks old, but many items fit the needs of that earlier time.

Others were soon forgotten.  One of them was a man's shirt garter.  It was an adjustable elastic strap, which was clipped to the top of a man's sock and to the side hem of his shirt.  The purpose was to keep the shirt down and the socks up.  The price was 50 cents, postpaid.

AHS does not meet in January.  The next meeting will be 7 p.m. on Thursday on Feb. 9, in the community center, 555 Main St.

Happy New Year to all!
