Audrey Sherman said the local quilting group always welcomes new members. Sublimity Quilters celebrate 40 years of stitching this year during the annual Quilt Show & Work Week, Jan. 22-26, 2018, at St. Boniface.

Since its 1978 inception, the Sublimity Quilters have sought to “preserve and encourage the art of quilting, provide a social function for quilters and accomplish charity work related to quilting and comforters.”

Audrey Sherman shared that aim Thursday, Jan. 25, midway through the group’s annual Quilt Show & Work Week. The group gathered each day through the week in the basement of the rectory at St. Boniface Catholic Church, welcoming visitors as members plied away at their craft.

Sherman and Edna Rickman are the only two 40-year members of the original assembly, but over time members have joined from Salem, Keizer, Silverton and various other locales throughout the Mid-Willamette Valley.

“Every year during the quilt show we try to pick up a few new members so we can keep it going,” Sherman said.

Much of the show’s focus includes charity projects, and the rectory sported a list of beneficiaries from years past. Sherman said each day there is usually a quilt being hand stitched, several people sewing on machines and others tying and hemming all sizes of comforters for charity.

Recipients include the Regis High School Auction, St. Boniface, local school carnivals and auctions, Birthright of Salem and victims of fires or poverty conditions.

The quilters welcome the company and treat visitors with door prizes as Sherman noted: “All comers are welcome to spend all day or a few hours with us.”

Anyone interested in the group or in becoming a member can contact Sherman, 503-510-2839, or Laura Mitchell, 503-580-0498.
