OSAA roundup: South Salem, Silverton, Stayton, Woodburn boys fall in semifinals
PORTLAND — After a heart-breaking 77-63 loss Friday to Jefferson, South Salem’s 2018-19 boys basketball journey is not over yet.
The Saxons will face Lake Oswego at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the OSAA Class 6A third-place game, with an opportunity to put Friday’s loss behind them and finish the season on a high note.
“This is life,” South Salem coach Tyler Allen said. “You never know when adversity is going to strike, and that next step is most important. And that’s tomorrow.”
The Saxons hung with perennial power Jefferson for most of the game Friday, but in the end, the Democrats were too talented.
“I’m proud of our guys,” Allen said. “Tonight, talent outlasted heart. We fought all season. We came up short, but I’m still happy for our guys.”
Nate Rawlins-Kibonge scored a game-high 25 points and 16 rebounds for Jefferson, and Lamar Washington added 20 points.
Eric Lungu led South Salem with 19 points, and Ryan Brown had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Brown was a strong presence for the Saxons in the first half, with 12 points and eight rebounds before halftime.
“I was going to give it everything I had. I was trying to finish above the rim, up as high as I could,” Brown said. “I wouldn’t take anyone in this state over my team. My team is my family. We work harder than anybody else.”
South Salem, which won the Mountain Valley Conference, heads into the third-place game with a 23-5 overall record.
In the postseason, the Saxons have wins against Roosevelt, West Linn and Tigard.
South Salem will try to place third at state for the second time in four seasons, having done it in 2016 during Jaden Nielsen-Skinner’s freshman season.
“We played our hearts out,” said Nielsen-Skinner, a senior who had 12 points and six assists Friday. “Proud of my guys.”
