On its creation, Market Street ran from Market Square in Hanley up the hill to Eaton Street and St John Street on the boundary between Hanley and Northwood.

In the early 1950s, Market Street was renamed Huntbach Street (after Alderman Michael Huntbach who was a locally well-known drapers shop owner).

The 1986 development of the A50 ‘Potteries Way’ ringroad cut across a number of streets, leading to the top half of Huntbatch Street being renamed Upper Huntbach Street.

According to Steve Birks, of Potteries.org: “Because of the fact that the six towns of Stoke-on-Trent had grown up independently, there had been duplication of many street names which led to confusion as people started to move more freely around the city.”

Today, Huntbach Street is still a widely utilised part of Hanley, starting with the Co-op (where The Grapes pub once stood) and NatWest Bank on the bottom corner adjoining Town Road.

Rising up on its incline, it has become home to a number of car parks over the years on both sides as you cross the dual carriageway making your way to Upper Huntbach Street where you pass the Hope (Healthcare) Centre and onto the more residential outlying buildings.
