Armed police cordoned off a residential street in Cheshire after receiving reports people were 'concerned for the safety' of a man and woman.

Police attended Woolston Avenue in Congleton shortly after 7.30am today (August 21).

A property was searched but no one was inside the address.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "Aided by a police helicopter, officers found the man and the woman in Rope Walk.

"They have been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and are currently in custody, where they will be questioned by officers."
