South Cheshire is to become home to one of the Government’s latest ‘maths hubs’ to help transform pupils’ numeracy skills.

Alsager School will oversee the venture from this September and will work with other primary and secondary schools across the region.

It follows the success of one of the first maths hubs in England, which was set up at Painsley Catholic College, in Cheadle, in 2014 and now supports more than 100 schools.

The focus will be on training courses for teachers and looking at maths mastery techniques pioneered in top-performing parts of the world, such as Shanghai.

A teacher from Alsager has already visited Shanghai as part of a maths development programme.

Headteacher Richard Middlebrook said: “To be designated as a maths hub is a fantastic achievement for the school."

There are currently only 37 of the hubs nationally. Each is led by a school with a proven track record in maths achievement and maths teaching.

Alsager's partner schools will come from across Cheshire.
