Volunteers are calling for CCTV to be installed at a vandal-plagued park after blaming yobs for causing thousands of pounds worth of damage at the attraction.

The latest incident happened at Bucknall Park on Sunday night when arsonists started a fire in the women's toilets.

Now the Friends of Bucknall Park is calling on Stoke-on-Trent City Council to support its efforts to install the CCTV.

It has enough cash to buy the cameras - but wants them linked to the council's CCTV network to make sure they are always monitored which is costly.

Group chairman Mike Pennington said: "Vandalism in this park is an ongoing problem. We have been in discussions with the council for a number of years about CCTV and it is something that really needs to be done.

"When incidents happen the police come down and always ask if we have CCTV and if we had then it would help catch people and also act as a deterrent. I have been told that the damage in the last 12 months adds up to around £5,000 and something needs to be done.

"We are willing to pay for the cameras but we need support from the council."

The council was called out on Sunday night to board up the toilets following the arson attack.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed two appliances from Hanley went to the scene at around 7pm.

Station manager David Steele said: "We were called to the fire in the public toilets at the park. Someone forced entry into the toilets and started the fire."

Stoke-on-Trent City Council was unavailable for comment over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Staffordshire Police are now investigating the arson attack. Anyone with any information about the latest incident should call the police on 101.
