An inquest has been opened into the death of a psychiatric patient who lost her fight for life after testing positive for coronavirus.

Carol Scott was a patient at the 14-bed Edith Shaw Hospital, in Leek, when she was admitted to the Royal Stoke University Hospital on April 8.

The 73-year-old tested positive for Covid-19 at the Hartshill complex on April 16 and was put on oxygen before being allowed to return to the Edith Shaw Hospital on April 29.

But her condition deteriorated, she was re-admitted to a Covid-19 ward at the Royal Stoke on May 1, and died on May 6.

The cause of death has been given as '1A Covid pneumonia and in part two previous stroke and type-two diabetes'.

Latest figures show around 300 people have died across the Royal Stoke and Stafford's County Hospital after testing positive for coronavirus since the start of the global pandemic.

North Staffordshire assistant coroner Sarah Murphy said: "Given the fact that she was detained under the Mental Health Act an inquest will be necessary. The family will be given a progress update in six weeks and an inquest date will be set administratively. The body has been released for funeral purposes."
