At least one hundred people have now died with coronavirus in Stoke-on-Trent - new figures show.

Statistics released today by the Office for National Statistics show a total of 100 people who normally lived in the city had had Covid-19 listed on their death certificates by the week ending May 1.

Of the deaths 53 took place in hospital, 39 were in care homes, five were at home, one was at a hospice, one was categorised at being at a 'other communal and one was listed as 'elsewhere'

A total of 1,005 people died of all causes in Stoke-on-Trent between January 1 2020 and May 1 - meaning Covid-19 was involved just under 10 per cent of all deaths between those dates.

The ONS figures released this morning cover all deaths up to May 1 and registered up until May 9.  Any death that mentions Covid-19 on the death certificate is counted in the figures.

As of yesterday (May 11), Public Health England said a total of 616 cases of coronavirus had been confirmed in Stoke-on-Trent - although as always the number of unconfirmed cases will be higher.

There have been 247 deaths with coronavirus confirmed at Royal Stoke University Hospital and Stafford County Hospital since the start of the pandemic - these will include many of the hospital deaths listed above and residents from other areas (we have included links to three surrounding areas of Staffordshire below).

The number of deaths involving Covid-19 in the UK has now passed 40,000, according to the latest available data.

The total includes new figures published on Tuesday by the Office for National Statistics.

These figures show that 35,044 deaths involving Covid-19 occurred in England and Wales up to May 1 (and had been registered up to May 9).

The latest figures from the National Records of Scotland, published last week, showed 2,795 deaths involving Covid-19 had been registered in Scotland up to May 3.

And the latest figures from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency, also published last week, showed 516 deaths involving Covid-19 had been registered in Northern Ireland up to May 6.

Together these figures mean that so far 38,355 deaths have been registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, including suspected cases.

A further 1,678 hospital patients in England who had tested positive for Covid-19 died between May 2 and May 10, according to figures published on Monday by NHS England – which, together with the total figure of 38,355 registered deaths, indicates the overall death toll for the UK is just over 40,000.
