Rapist driving instructor Martyn Rees has been jailed for 13 years after being convicted of a string of horrific sex offences - including the rape of a 14-year-old girl.

The 'dangerous' 37-year-old committed sex offences against a number of young female pupils who were taking driving lessons with him.

The defendant - who used to live at Dimsdale Parade West, Wolstanton , and then moved to West Avenue, Penkhull , ahead of his trial - was convicted of one charge of rape; two charges of sexual activity with a child; one charge of sexual assault; two charges of attempted sexual assault; six charges of making indecent photographs of a child; and two of possessing extreme pornographic images.

He had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of assault by penetration, two sexual assault offences and making indecent images of a child which related to an attack on one of his 17-year-old pupils.

Rees returned to Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court this morning to be sentenced by Judge David Fletcher.

He was locked up for 13 years with five years on an extended licence.

Judge Fletcher told Rees: “You had a disturbing and unhealthy interest in young children and extreme pornography.”

During the trial, prosecutor Darron Whitehead told the jury: “In his role as a driving instructor, the defendant had the responsibility of teaching young females to drive. They, in turn, trusted him to teach them and protect them as they were learning.

“Mr Rees didn’t seem to see it like that. All young females in his car were, in his eyes, prey. It seems like he felt he was irresistible to all of them.

“He was over-flirtatious and verbally and physically inappropriate. In his phone were many pictures and videos of young females’ legs taken while they were in the driver’s seat under his tuition.

“Some were over 18 so there are no charges relating to them. Others have not been identified.”

Judge Fletcher made Rees the subject of an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and he was placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.

Rees must serve two thirds of the 13 years before he is eligible to be considered for release by the parole board.

Speaking after the case, Detective Constable Andrew Hayes, from Staffordshire Police's  Child Protection and Exploitation Team, said: “Today’s sentence reflects just how dangerous Martyn Rees is. Over a number of years Rees offended against vulnerable young females, abusing his position as a driving instructor.

“The successful conviction was only possible due to the bravery and courage of the victims. They were brave enough to report what had happened and had the courage to have their voices heard in court. I hope this is a positive message to victims of similar offences that you will be listened to, you will be believed, you will be supported and the offence will be investigated.

“I’d like to thank our partners, including social care, education and health, as we work together to tackle child sexual exploitation.”
