Firefighters mounted a middle-of-the-night rescue mission when a man became trapped after falling out of bed at his Stoke-on-Trent home.

Emergency services descended on Ballinson Road, Blurton, in the early hours of this morning after a pensioner getting up to use the toilet became tangled in his walking frame.

His panicked wife was unable to free him and alerted the fire and ambulance services at around 3.30am today (May 19).

It is believed he had been stuck for around 45 minutes to an hour.

A Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Services spokesman said: "We were called after a man had fallen out of bed and became trapped in a walking frame. He had been getting up to go the toilet when he fell.

"His wife was downstairs at the time and he managed to wake her up and called us.

"We managed to release him and were at the scene for around half an hour. Paramedics were also called to check he was OK."
