Major works are underway to try to cut queues at one of Stoke-on-Trent's most grid-locked roundabouts.

It will see a traffic island reduced in size at one of the entrances to the roundabout linking City Road and Leek Road, in Fenton.

And that will allow two lanes to be created for motorists heading towards the A500 from the roundabout.

The work - which also includes new road markings and traffic signs - started this week and is expected to be completed by Friday, June 5.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council is carrying out the road improvements during the coronavirus pandemic.

It is part of wider plans to improve traffic flow on Leek Road between its junctions with City Road and lime kiln traffic lights, in Bucknall, over the next 12 months.

Councillor Daniel Jellyman, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Anyone who was travelled along Leek Road knows how busy it can get, particularly at peak times.

"It’s a route which is operating beyond its capacity, leading to significant congestion and journey time delays which are frustrating for motorists and cost businesses and the economy money.

"Great transport links are essential for a thriving economy and the work on the City Road section is very much the first step in a series of improvements to the Leek Road corridor.

“By carrying out phased improvements to the key pinch-points on the road, including Joiners Square roundabout, it will help to get traffic flowing more freely which will reduce pollution, create a greener city and make the area a more accessible place to live and do business.
