Four extra classrooms are set to be built at a booming primary school.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has lodged a planning application for the expansion at Hanley's Waterside Primary School.

It includes plans for the four extra classrooms, toilets, storage facilities and an expanded canopy at the Eastwood Road school.

The extra space is needed to accommodate an additional 120 children as the school moves to two classes in each year group.

Headteacher Joanne Knowles said: “We are expanding by taking on two classes per year instead of one-and-a-half. We are building four permanent classrooms for the extra 120 children at Waterside.

“It is a very exciting time for the school to be growing like this. The work started in September with us taking on additional children into reception.”

The school opened in 2007 when staff and pupils relocated from the old Joiners Square Primary School in nearby Hazelhurst Street.

StokeonTrentLive reported last month how the council is already spending £430,000 on additional hall and kitchen space at the school in the 2018/19 academic year.

The council's planning application states: "The proposed development comprises the provision of a two-storey modular building to provide four additional classrooms with toilet and storage facilities."

Parents have welcomed the planned expansion.

Keiran Aubrey, aged 31, said: “This is going to be brilliant for the school and I am happy with these plans.

“Anything that benefits the school is going to help the children and their education so this can only be a good thing. I have one child at the school and one more who will be going to the school so I think this will be good for them.”

Amanda Tilsley, aged 56, of Northwood, who has a grandchild at the school, said: “This is a good school and my grandchild likes it.

“I have not been shown around the school but I think this will be good for the children at the school. It will be good for this school to have these new facilities.”

Planners are expected to rule on the application within weeks.
