A pub in a South Cheshire town was evacuated after reports of a gas leak.

Pubgoers were evacuated and a cordon put in place at the Cheshire Cat on Welsh Row in Nantwich at around 7.30pm last night (Monday August 19).

Witnesses reported seeing a number of emergency services at the scene - with the fire service later confirming it was a false alarm.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said two fire engines from Nantwich and one from Crewe had been sent to the scene.

She added:  "Shortly after 7.30pm firefighters were called to reports of a suspected gas leak following a carbon monoxide alarm activation at a public house on Welsh Row, Nantwich.

"On arrival at the scene crews found that a full evacuation of the premises had already taken place and all staff and members of the public were accounted for.

"Police were called to the scene and a safety cordon was put in place as a precautionary measure.

"Two firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and used a gas detector to locate and leaks.

"As they moved around the building they also opened all of the windows and doors to help ventilate the property.

"Following a thorough search of the premises it was determined that it was a false alarm."

The pub had fully reopened by around 8.45pm.

In a post on their Facebook page the Cheshire Cat said: "Just to reassure all our customers we are back open as normal and everything is fine.

"We have very sensitive alarm systems in place to notify us of any small errors and we can’t thank the emergency services enough for their swift response however today has been a false alarm and there is nothing to worry about."
