Stoke-on-Trent is bracing itself for a washout as a warning is issued for 24 hours of heavy rain.

The Met Office have put out a yellow weather warning, in force from 7am tomorrow until 7am Thursday and affecting most of the county.

Forecasters predict the city could see around 1-2 millimetres of rain fall per hour, while Newcastle and Stafford could see anywhere between two and eight millimetres.

Temperatures will remain mild and we can expect a high of 13°C throughout Wednesday before the mercury rises on Thursday to 15°C.

Residents are being told to expect some flooding and disruption to transport in some areas.

A Met Office spokesman said: "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.

"Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services, while spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads."

A Staffordshire County Council spokesman said: "They're expecting periods of heavy rain to fall, which could lead to difficult driving conditions for a time.  The rain is expected to ease off during Thursday morning.

"Adverse weather can make driving difficult.  Therefore, it is always best to plan your journey and check the latest weather and travel advice.

"Our highways teams will be ready to respond to any issues throughout this wet spell, and we would ask people to bear with us if they do need to respond to incidents."
