A Stoke-on-Trent flag has won an online competition to be crowned the best flag in the UK.

Penkhull's flag has been taking part in a Twitter competition set up by the UK Flag Institute in the absence of sporting events.

The satirical competition has been called the FA Cup of Flags, and users were invited to vote for their favourite flags in polls.

And Penkhull won against Preston in tonight's final with 52 per cent of the vote and more than 6,000 votes.

The FA Cup of Flags started with 36 UK town flags, including Penkhull’s green, yellow and blue flag.

The flag was designed during a village competition two years ago, and flies proudly from the flagpole in the centre of the village.

The design features art to symbolise the village-like qualities, the Penkhull crossroads, Spode pottery and St Thomas’ Church.
