Police are appealing for information after an arsonist torched a car in a Stoke-on-Trent street.

Emergency services were called to Russell Place, Goldenhill, at around 2.40am on Thursday morning following reports of a car fire.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and passed the incident into the hands of the police, who have now launched an investigation.

A Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We received a call at 2.40am and sent one crew, from Sandyford, to the scene.

"The car was well alight on arrival and two firefighters, using breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet, extinguished the fire.

"It is believed to have been deliberate ignition. The crew had left the scene by 3.17am."

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "Officers from Staffordshire Police were called to a report of a car fire on Russell Place, Stoke-on-Trent, at 3.14am yesterday (February 21).

"The fire, which is being treated as arson, was safely put out by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and an investigation is underway.

"Anyone with information should email Michael.james@staffordshire.pnn.police.uk quoting incident number 57 of February 21."
