An investigation is underway after a man was stabbed in the stomach in the city centre this morning.

Police and paramedics were called to Broad Street in Hanley at around 10.30am today (Thursday November 22).

The victim, a 40-year-old man, was taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said "A 27-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent was arrested on suspicion of assault grievous bodily harm with intent.

"He remains in police custody and enquiries are on-going.

"A knife blade was also recovered from the scene."

West Midlands Ambulance Service said they had sent an ambulance and a paramedic officer after being called at 10.48am.

A spokesman said: "We were called to Broad Street to reports of an assault.

"Police were on the scene.

"One patient was treated at the scene and taken to hospital."

Anyone with information is asked to call Staffordshire Police quoting incident 188 of 22 November.

These included 184 reports of anti-social behaviour, four reports of bicycle theft, 14 of burglary, 21 of criminal damage and arson, five drugs offences, 34 of 'other theft', two of possession of weapons, 16 of public order, six of robbery, 35 of shoplifting, five of theft from the person, eight of vehicle crime, 89 of violence and sexual offences and five described as 'other crime'.
