A Stoke-on-Trent care home has been rated ‘good’ by a health watchdog - months after being ordered to improve.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) carried out an unannounced visit to Scotia Heights, in Tunstall, last month after it was deemed to be ‘requiring improvement’ this time last year and again at an interim inspection.

The facility has now been marked as ‘good’ in each of the five main categories inspectors assessed.

Exemplar Health Care, the company which runs the home, today welcomed the latest report.

Chief executive Euan Craig said: “I am delighted that the CQC has acknowledged Scotia Heights for their excellent care and their commitment to providing a kind and caring environment for our residents. It’s a fantastic testament to the whole Scotia Heights team.

“The home has shown an incredible dedication to providing the excellent care for some of the most vulnerable people in Stoke-on-Trent and I am so proud of everyone for making people’s lives better, every single day.

“What really strikes me about Scotia is the lovely bond that the care team have built with our residents and that people can, with specialist support, continue to do the things they love.”

Scotia Heights is a purpose-built 60-bed specialist home divided into 10 units for adults with a neurological disability, brain injury, enduring mental health problems, early onset dementia or who have had a stroke. At the time of the inspection there were 48 people living there.

The report found that the home’s care and effectiveness, safety, response and leadership were good.

It reads: “We carried out a responsive inspection in June 2018 and July 2018 due to information of concern and found improvements were still required in the key questions of 'safe' and 'well led'.

“There was a continued breach in regulation because the systems in place to monitor and manage the service were not effective. We served a warning notice and asked the provider to make improvements within a specific timescale.

“At this inspection the required improvements had been made and the service had met the characteristics of 'good' in all areas.”

Home manager Steven King praised the employees for helping turn around the fortunes of the home.

He added: “I am so proud of the team for being recognised as 'good' in all areas by the CQC.

“The report has fully recognised our commitment to our residents and the hard work we put in to providing a caring, committed, effective and well-led service – a fantastic endorsement for everyone at Scotia Heights.”
