Teenager Jazmin Hazel led police on a high-speed pursuit through the Potteries - in a car stolen from a children's home worker.

The 18-year-old drove through red lights during the chase, which took in the A34, A500 and parts of Trent Vale and Penkhull.

Now the defendant has been banned from the roads and told to carry out unpaid work.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard the keys to a Vauxhall Insignia, owned by the worker from a children's home, were taken on February 19.

At around 1.15am on February 21, the car - which had been reported as stolen - was spotted by Staffordshire Police officers.

Philip Brunt, prosecuting, said: "Police officers on duty saw it pass them on the A34 and, in their view, as soon as it became aware of them it accelerated away.

"They put on their blue lights and it continued on the A34, where it reached speeds of 60mph. It went through a set of red lights and continued to a roundabout in Hanford, where it undertook a stationary HGV. It clipped the kerbs and went into the nearside lane of the A500, travelling at 60 to 70mph in a 50mph zone.

"The vehicle came off at a slip road and the driver was struggling to control it and the damage was seen to be getting worse."

The court heard that in Fleming Road, Stoke, officers believed the vehicle was coming to a stop, with other patrols also having joined the pursuit. But as an officer got out, the defendant drove off and in to a police car before heading off at around 50mph.

Mr Brunt said: "Officers deployed a stinger and this defendant went to avoid it and was almost in a collision with another vehicle.

"After a sharp right turn, the vehicle went on to Hilton Road and went on the opposite side of the carriageway and stayed there for about 200 metres."

Hazel then continued on to Newcastle Lane before losing control near to Penkhull's Marquis of Granby, where the vehicle stopped and officers discovered four occupants.

Mr Brunt said: "One officer focused on the driver - this defendant, who was arrested. She gave no comment in interview."

The defendant pleaded not guilty to aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving, driving with no insurance, no licence, and causing damage to a police vehicle. However, she was convicted following a trial before magistrates.

James Bruce, mitigating, said: "She accepts she knew the car was not legitimate and is sorry for being part of it."

The defence also called a young person's adviser from Wolverhampton social services who works with Hazel. He told the court that Hazel, of Hailes Park Close, Wolverhampton, had secured her own accommodation and was aiming to become a physiotherapist by enrolling at college.

Judge David Fletcher

Judge David Fletcher handed the defendant a 12-month community order and told her she must complete 100 hours of unpaid work. In addition, the teenager was banned from driving for 12 months and must take an extended test before she can drive again. She must also pay £300 in costs.

Judge Fletcher said: "You are not a child anymore and therefore this must be a warning to you. "
