Two women were forced to flee a home when a fire broke out late at night after cooking had been left on the hob.

Firefighters descended on Weston Road, Meir, to tack a small blaze in the kitchen at around 11.18pm last night (January 25).

The two occupants had evacuated the property and were checked over by paramedics at the scene for smoke inhalation but did not require hospital treatment.

An investigation revealed the fire had started after food was left unattended.

Now a warning has been issued to take care while cooking.

A Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We were called to a small kitchen fire in Weston Road after food had been left unattended on a cooker.

"All the occupants - two adult women - were out on arrival. They were assessed by colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service but were discharged at the scene and allowed back in.

"We carried out an investigation and fitted smoke alarms.

"We would like to remind people to not cook under the influence of alcohol or drugs and to never leave food unattended.

"We'd also urge people to check they have working smoke alarms."

Crews from Longton and Hanley attended and left the scene around 45 minutes later.
