Families are set to win their fight for extended double yellow lines to stop drinkers parking near one of the city's newest bars.

Highways officers have already agreed to install the lines along part of Barlaston Old Road, Longton Road and Albert Road in Trentham. It follows the opening of Titanic Brewery's bod cafe bar in a former NatWest bank.

But residents in Barlaston Old Road are calling for the parking ban to stretch as far as Burrington Drive.

It follows fears that parked cars will create an obstruction and result in accidents, particularly as lorries use the route to go to Severn Trent sewage works.

Now Stoke-on-Trent City Council looks set to agree to the Burrington Drive request.

The bod cafe bar in Trentham

The Barlaston Old Road residents' petition attracted 18 signatures.

It states: “We are concerned about the amount of disruption caused by vehicles parking outside our properties all hours of the day and night while they visit the bod cafe bar, on Longton Road, Trentham.

"We are calling for the council to extend the proposed double yellow lines on both sides of the road along Barlaston Old Road up to the junction with Burrington Drive.”

The latest bod cafe bar opened on April 29.

Pensioner Reginald Bedson said: “We get lots of cars parking down here and on Albert Road. The cars parked on Barlaston Old Road make it difficult for the tankers from the sewage works to get past.”

Stephen Fawcett, aged 57, from Barlaston Old Road, said: “This is a thoroughfare and it can get a bit dangerous when cars are parked on the road.”

Ron Shapiro, aged 60, added: “We signed the petition because of the amount of traffic on the road now.

“The parking leads to wagons bottling up. It is quite danagerous. We want the double yellow lines up to Burrington Drive to keep the traffic flowing.

“The bar itself is fine. But whether it ought to be there is another matter because there is absolutely no parking, apart from two disabled spaces. The rest of the customers have to park on the roads and footpaths.

“It can be difficult for the Severn Trent wagons to pass if cars are parked.”

Neighbour Theresa Williams, aged 37, said: “We like the pub and we walk to it and I am pleased the building has not gone to rack and ruin.

“Widening the road would fix all the problems. We signed the petition on safety issues.”

Titanic Brewery gave the building a £300,000 make-over before opening its latest venue.

Manager Matt Kent along with supervisors Lucy Pinter and Angela Davies at the bar.

Bar manager Matt Kent, aged 31, said: “As far as I am aware, the double yellow lines are being installed.

“The idea is that people are not going to come from the other side of Stoke-on-Trent. We are not a destination pub. Our primary market is Trentham residents and we hope customers will walk or get taxis.

“The bar is going really well, and it is a bit too busy at times.

“We are always prepared to listen to residents’ concerns and work with them.”
