Staff at the Royal Stoke University Hospital could soon be living in quality apartments after work began on the development of a former garage site.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council's private housing company Fortior Homes is developing the brownfield land off Chamberlain Avenue in Penkhull with the construction of a number of properties.

Aimed at key workers for the hospital, as well as other professionals, 10 one-bedroom apartments in a low-rise, two-storey block will be built – with completion expected in spring 2020.

Councillor Joanne Powell-Beckett, the city council’s cabinet member for housing said: "We have an ambitious housing growth programme in Stoke-on-Trent, with the aim of providing high quality accommodation for residents at all stages of life.

"As part of this, these properties are being developed, let and managed by our housing company Fortior Homes.

"By redeveloping this land we are adding to an already rapidly growing portfolio of new homes for residents, as well as creating a more pleasant environment for the whole community."

Councillor Abi Brown, leader of the city council and Fortior Homes board member, added: "It’s great to see work starting on this site, which will transform a former garage site into a quality housing development and bring brownfield land back to life.

"Each apartment will have its own front door, and there will also be residents’ and visitors’ parking spaces, as well as communal spaces outside.

"We want to make sure Stoke-on-Trent has homes to suit all needs, and for people at all stages of life.

"These properties are targeted at the professional market, and we are hoping to attract staff at the nearby hospital or those who work in the city centre.

"The size and layout of the apartments would attract predominantly single working people, and we believe there is a definite market and demand for this property type."

The apartments are being built in partnership with RSJ Builders Limited.
