A flood alert has been renewed for two rivers in Staffordshire - with further rainfall expected over the coming days and a number of roads remain shut in South Cheshire.

Heavy rain has led to flooding in areas of Stafford Borough in areas including Victoria Park.

Today, Saturday June 15, the Environment Agency renewed a flood alert, for the River Sow and River Penk in the area.

At 11.34am today, the Environment Agency said:  "River levels remain high in the River Sow and Penk catchment as a result of heavy rainfall over the past few days.

"Flooding is affecting low-lying land and roads along the Rivers Sow and Penk and their tributaries.

"Further showers are forecast over the next 24 hours. Please take care near watercourses. We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are actively checking river levels and the weather forecast."

A number of flood alerts in Staffordshire are also in force in East Staffordshire and the south east of the county, including Burton and Rugeley.

Several events in Staffordshire have been cancelled or postponed due to expected bad weather including the Party in the Park in Leek and the Fun Dog Show at Wedgwood Cricket Club in Barlaston.

The latest weekend Met Office weather forecast for the West Midlands region, which includes Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire, states:  "A rather cloudy day today, with outbreaks of showery rain at times, some of which could be heavy. Some sunny spells may develop from the southwest later on.

"Becoming mostly dry for a time this evening and into the start of the night, but further bursts of showery rain are possible through the early hours.

"Sunday will be breezy with sunshine and showers. Some of the showers will be heavy."

Across the border in Cheshire police are also advising motorists to take extra care on the roads.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said:  "Once again we have adverse and changing weather conditions on the roads. If you are travelling please be mindful of your route and consider your stopping distance and speed."

A spokesman said:  "Though the weather seems to be OK at the moment. It is still unsafe down by the River Weaver. Be careful when approaching this area."

A number of roads in Cheshire were closed due to flooding.

Shortly after 6pm this evening Cheshire East Council confirmed Gresty Lane in Shavington, which had been flooded, had now reopened - although Nursery Road in Alsager is now reported shut.

A Cheshire East Council spokesman said:  "Nursery Road in Alsager is currently closed until further notice due to excessive flooding. Please avoid the area where possible and follow suitable diversion where appropriate."
