Stoke City legend Jimmy Greenhoff is back home after spending a week in hospital.

The 73 year-old crowd favourite is said to be tired but in good spirits at home in Alsager, but is still being monitored by medics.

He was taken ill before the Manchester United v Chelsea game eight days ago and rushed from Old Trafford to a nearby hospital.

Doctors quickly ruled out a heart attack, but remained concerned about his condition for several days and so detained him for further tests and observation.

Supporters predictably sent their best wishes in their droves after hearing about his illness and there was a hearty round of applause before Saturday's game against Derby when his name was mentioned on the PA and big screen.

Greenhoff joined Stoke in 1969 and quickly established himself as a crowd favourite before becoming a Wembley winner in 1972.

He later established what many regarded as a telepathic relationship with Alan Hudson at the Victoria Ground before events conspired to force his departure.

The loss of the Butler Street Stand roof to high winds in January 1976 left Stoke so financially stricken that they had to sell Greenhoff to Manchester United.

But despite subsequent success at Old Trafford, he has always maintained that he would have remained at the Victoria Ground given the choice.
