A new go-karting track set to open at a former shopping warehouse will help create around 40 jobs.

TeamSport Indoor Karting has lodged plans to convert the former Latifs superstore, in Burslem, into a battery-powered course, complete with snack bar, lounge, workshop and viewing area.

The company says it will create dozens of jobs, with the managers making up most of the full-time roles and marshals, mechanics and receptionists operating on a part-time basis.

TeamSport says it will offer all of its employees the chance to gain qualifications in customer service and management, as well as literacy skills.

In a statement submitted as part of the application, it said: “TeamSport runs specific programmes with a national NVQ provider, who comes into each TeamSport centre, providing formal, structured learning and development programmes to all TeamSport employees.

“Their facilities are ideally placed to hold charitable fundraising events and, in addition, each centre specifically supports a local charity. Local councils use their facilities to support disadvantaged children and regularly use TeamSport as a reward for behavioural improvements.”

Latifs closed earlier this year

TeamSport already operates 29 sites across the UK, including Liverpool, Leeds and Birmingham.

June Carwright, founder of community group Our Burslem, has welcomed the plans. She said: “It is brilliant and this is exactly what Burslem needs. We have always said we want the town to be a destination and this will help.

“It hasn’t been used since Latifs shut and something like a go-kart track will be brilliant. With a good paint job it could look fantastic. My daughter is even looking forward to it because her boys love go-karts.”

Stoke-on-Trent North MP Ruth Smeeth also welcomed the investment into Burslem. She added: “I’m delighted because it is a big site and if it was left empty it would be a disaster for both Burslem and Cobridge. I’m pleased they’ve submitted a planning application because it is a big investment.

“Bringing 40 jobs to Burslem is great news and I am delighted we are having a facility like this in the town.”

If approved, the facility will boast banked corners, ramps and straights. Up to 14 electric karts that have a top speed of 40mph will be racing at any one time. All sessions will have to be pre-booked with the company.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council planners are due to make a decision on the application in the coming months.
