Investigation continues after axe incident in Sunderland street

A man arrested by Northumbria Police after a ‘small axe’ was recovered in a Sunderland street has been released on bail while an investigation into a disturbance continues.

Officers were called to Stockton Terrace on Thursday, May 28 following reports of a disturbance in the area, involving man on the street – who was believed to be intoxicated – with a suspected axe.

After a search, they arrested a 59-year-old man on suspicion of possessing and offensive weapon and recovered a small axe.

The call came in at around 1.45pm, Northumbria Police said.

A number of police vehicles were spotted in the street on Thursday afternoon, with armed officers from the force also attending the scene.

The arrested man has now been released on bail while the investigation continues.

A police spokesman told the Echo on Friday, May 29: “A 59-year-old man has been released on police bail. Inquiries are ongoing.”
