VAN BUREN, N.Y. -- A motorcyclist was charged Monday night after leading police on a high-speed chase from Elbridge to Van Buren, according to the Jordan Police Department.

Gabriel Martin, 34, of Memphis, was charged with reckless driving and unlawfully fleeing a police officer, Jordan police said.

The chase began in the village of Jordan at about 7:50 p.m. A Jordan officer on duty observed a man operating a Harley-Davidson motorcycle at a speed in excess of 100 mph traveling east on Route 31 through the village. The officer attempted to catch up to the motorcycle and after a brief period discontinued the pursuit of the motorcycle but continued to try to locate the motorcycle, Jordan police said.

The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office Air-1 helicopter was able to provide assistance by keeping officers abreast of the motorcyclist’s location as it wound its way around various streets in the towns of Elbridge and Van Buren.

The motorcyclist was taken into custody by Jordan police and state troopers at Old Route 31 and West Dead Creek Road in the town of Van Buren. Martin was identified as the operator of the Harley. While taking Martin into custody, a TASER device was deployed, Jordan police said.

Martin was evaluated at the scene by Warners-Memphis Fire District and Greater Baldwinsville Ambulance Corps EMS personnel.

Martin also faces several vehicle and traffic offenses. He is scheduled to appear Jordan Village Court at a later date.

The incident remains under investigation at this time, Jordan police said.
