This Day in Braves History: August 14

1914 - The Braves pound out 11 hits off Jeff Tesreau and beat the Giants 7-3. Bill James earns the win as Joe Connolly finishes a triple shy of the cycle.

1971 - The Braves purchase infielder Tony LaRussa from the Oakland A’s. LaRussa will appear in nine games for the Braves going 2-for-7 at the plate.

1972 - Johnny Bench drives in five runs and finishes a triple shy of the cycle in a 12-2 win over the Braves.

1992 - Atlanta blows out the Pirates 15-0. Lonnie Smith records five hits while Brian Hunter and Otis Nixon have four apiece. Tom Glavine throws seven shutout innings before Randy St. Claire and Mike Stanton close it out. Former Braves left-hander Zane Smith starts for the Pirates and allows four runs in just 1/3 of an inning.

1996 - The Braves promote top prospect Andruw Jones to the majors. Jones is believed to be the first players since Philadelphia pitcher Pat Combs in 1989 to begin the season in A-Ball and then play in Double-A, Triple-A and the majors in the same season.

1997 - Atlanta acquires first baseman Greg Colbrunn from the Twins for minor league outfielder Marc Lewis.

2017 - Rockies pitcher Chad Bettis throws seven scoreless innings against the Braves in his first game back since undergoing treatment for testicular cancer.
